FAQ

Q)I'm a decent swimmer/cyclist/runner but a have never swam/cycled/run before in my life and would likely drown/fall/have to walk. Can I still join?
A) Yes! We only require that you are able to swim about 300m on your own before you join, no matter how long it takes you. You are welcome to join for 2 sports in the meantime. We have a HUGE range of abilities and ANYBODY is welcome to join. There are no tryouts. If you are motivated, that's all that matters.

Q) I might only be able to attend "x" number of practices per week. Is that OK?
A) Yup! It's your training and it's completely up to you how many times you come. The programs are posted online in our "member's only" section, so if you want to complete the same workout as the club, you have them at your disposal.

Q) Will I need a gym membership?
A) YES. You need a way to access the gym for workouts... Climbing through the windows is too dangerous.

Q) Is there any way I can just join for one sport? Which sports for 'two' sports?
A) Sorry, unfortunately, we cannot allow memberships for only one sport. Triathlon is a multisport event. Depending on your interest, check out McGill Master's Swimming or Cycling Teams. If you are interested in two sports, you may choose any two of the three.

Q) What is OPEN HOUSE? When is it?
A) Open House is held for ~ 1 week at the beginning of every semester. It's a time when you can come participate in any / all of the practices to see if you like MTC before registering. The last day of open house is when cheques are due, so don't miss the deadline!

Q) I would like to join part way through the semester. Is this possible?
A) This may be possible if we have not yet reached capacity. Please email to find out.

Q) Do I need any special equipment?
A) If you are joining us for fall or winter semester, all of our cycling is indoors, so you do not need a bike! We do continue running outdoors year round, so you will need warm clothing (spandex recommended, but not necessary). You will also need a bathing suit, googles, and a bathing cap for swimming.

Q)Where can I get shoes / running stuff?
A) Check out Boutique Endurance, our sponsors! (link at bottom of webpage). Tell them you're from MTC and there are great deals.

Q) Where can I get a bike?
A) Check out Cycles St. Laurent, our sponsors! (link at bottom of webpage). You don't need a top of the line bike, but a road bike is very useful. You MUST have a helmet, water, and everything to change a flat.

Q) Where is Park Kent?
A) From the gym go around the mountain (either up Parc to Cote-Ste-Catherine to Decelles or west taking Pins/Cedar/CDN/Decelles); Go north on Decelles, which ends at Kent; from there, if you don't see the track you're lost. OR a few min walk from metro Cote-Des-Neiges • Link to map

Q) How do I get to the Ice Breaker Bridge (bike workouts)?
Link to map

Q) How the *$%* do I find the "MTC box" for payment? Can I pay in cash?
A) In the McGill Gym, take an immediate left at the cafeteria and go down the stairs. Go to the end of the hallway and you will find a box labelled "MTC". YES, you can pay with cash, but please no coins. Seal everything in an envelope & include your name. Please don't forget new member registration form!

Q) If I'm not a McGill student, can I still join?
Yes! McGill Triathlon does not discriminate against scholastic status. However, you still need a McGill gym membership.
